Day 6 - July 12
Eilean Donan, Urquhart Castle, Loch Ness, & Fort George
Due to the schedule change from the day before, we made the stunning trip back to Eilean Donan. The high mountains give way to long lochs and the mesmerizing landscape bounced from greenery to heather to grassy and rock-crag’d vertical drops. Eilean Donan is a private residence, so we were not allowed to take any pictures inside out of respect for the MacRae family.
Our next stop was Urquhart Castle. Set right on Loch Ness, it’s a perfect example of determination and skill. Most of the destruction came at the meeting of gunpowder and match along with the hands of the local farmers that carried the valuable stones away. Luckily there is much that is known about the structure and the life that carried on there, so the Scouts set about learning as much as they could before we moved on.
Fort George is a military installation at the head of the Moray Firth where it meets the North Sea. Once located in Inverness, it was relocated to it’s current location and is still a working military stronghold. Influenced by Spanish design, it can withstand attack from land and sea.
